Zia is by far the most popular mountain village of Kos. As you meander up through the countryside of wild flowers (especially in Spring), and the small fields full of sheep and goats, the journey in itself is an experience. The scenery spectacular, the views breathtaking.
Zia village is picturesque, quaint and a must to visit whilst staying in Kos. Many of the daily island excursions stop here, jeep safari’s and the local bus service. It can get busy at certain times of day, and it is famous for it’s sunset and Greek Nights.
The little street is lined with traditional Greek tavernas, some with roof terraces and balconies which allow you to really enjoy the backdrop of mountains and see the panoramic views of Kos and it’s neighbouring islands. A friendly village, with a wonderful atmosphere, perfect for shopping too. You will be enthralled by the local products made from olive oil and natural herbs and remedies (for colds, arthritis, hair loss, etc). There are embroided table cloths, hand made rugs. Honey from Zia ‘The Nectar of The Gods’, and many souvenir/tourists shops and beautiful handmade ceramics and jewelry too.
As you walk around the lanes you can smell the rich herbs and spices and sample the local drink which is tinged with cinnamon and quenches your thirst.
A small Greek church is a small walk up the hill, and is often open. You will be amazed at the colour and vibrant beauty as you walk in and the lavish splendor. You can also discover winding streets and a path for the experienced walker/climber that leads you right up the mountain Dikaios itself. Don’t forget your water, it’s quite a way to the top!
Probably one of the best places on the island to enjoy the sunset, very romantic and enchanting… and remember your camera!
Plenty of walks in and around the village and old donkey streets that take you down to the villages below. The main road has quite recently under gone re- surfacing and is in general good. Go slow!
Having just written this, a friend who lives in the village mentioned there are road works taking place at this current time (March), I do hope they will all be finished by next month…!!!
