Antimachia is a quiet village situated right in the center of the island, well almost! It is close to the Airport of Kos. It is not a resort as such, in fact it doesn’t have a beach or is a popular holiday destination with hotels and apartments… What is does have is:-
A very old fashioned (although recently restored) windmill, sometimes with the sails blowing in the wind, picture perfect… and you used to be able to climb up the little stairway right to the top.
Most important of all, which always attracts people (because they are curious to know how it used to be in Greece, before the tourists arrived) is:-
A Traditional House which is like a museum, except it’s even better! It is a portrayal of how middle class Koans used to live in years gone by. Personal belongings, furniture, embroidery cushions, that would all be hand made and sewn by gas lamps, old style clothes, photographs, ceramics and you can even watch and learn how to weave. Home made carpets and bed blankets were all done on this old fashioned weaving machine which is still in use today.
The garden is full of potted flowers and outside is where the larder used to be, of course they didn’t have fridges in those days, so most of the meat used to be hung up and smoked so that it would keep.
This village comes alive at different times during the year, most of the celebrations are held throughtout the summer period. Festivals of Honey and Wine are held here. If you are visiting the Island during this time you can be part of the celebrations. Try the local honey in every shape and form, dripping from a spoon, or baked in a delicious cake or even just plain on top of your yoghurt.
There is a local honey stand open most days during the summer season where you can sample nectar delights!
The Wine Festival is also a time to rejoice and drink, Greek dancing, fun and merriment, and a lot of tasting (without spitting…) and headaches the morning after! The local wines are good, and very powerful!
Antimachia can be reached by the local bus service. It is also a popular stop with excursions around the island. Or, of course you can hire a car and time then is no limit!
